\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tA few years ago, I was walking in Plaka\u2014somewhere along Areopagitou\u2014with a friend of mine. It was one of those quiet days when you have nothing to do, yet you carry a lot within you. We were talking about work, about something that was on his mind. I was listening\u2014or so I thought.\n\nUntil he looked at me and said:\n\n\u201cI feel like you\u2019re not really listening to me. You\u2019re just waiting for your turn to speak.\u201d\n\nHe didn\u2019t say it aggressively. He said it calmly, almost as an observation. But it shook me. Because he was right.\n\nWe all say we want communication. But usually, we mean: \u201cI want to express my own version.\u201d Active listening\u2014truly listening, with the intention to understand rather than to respond\u2014often doesn\u2019t happen, not because it\u2019s difficult, but because it requires you to be genuinely present.\n\nIn practice, active listening means:\n\n\u2013 I don\u2019t interrupt. I don\u2019t finish sentences.\n\u2013 I don\u2019t prepare my response while the other person is speaking.\n\u2013 I don\u2019t try to prove that I\u2019m right.\n\u2013 I listen with my whole being.\n\nAnd the (positive) intention behind all this is crucial. Because intention shows. And the person you\u2019re talking to feels it before you even speak. You may say the perfect sentence, but if there is no space, the other person will feel pressure. You may say a simple \u201cI\u2019m listening,\u201d and it can feel completely empty if, inside, you\u2019re counting the seconds until it\u2019s your turn.\n\nNo one is really looking for perfect words. They are looking not to have to raise their voice to be heard. They need to leave a conversation with the feeling: You saw me. You heard me. I wasn\u2019t alone.\n\nYou may not need to say anything at all. You just need to be there. With a clear presence. And let your non-verbal communication say:\n\u201cI\u2019m here.
