This novel is the realization of a childhood dream. I was ten years old when, on the seashore of the small fishing village of Katelios in Kefalonia, I heard two fishermen talking about Gerakis, the viceroy of Siam. “Who is this man with a bird’s name?” and “Where is this country I’ve never heard of?” were my first questions. And how did he become viceroy in this Siam, if he was Greek? My childhood curiosity was ignited, and I listened closely as the fishermen spoke, describing him as a remarkable Kefalonian sailor who once shipwrecked in exotic Siam and went on to rule it for many years.
